India’s literacy rate stands at 76%, placing the country 148th globally (Ref: WorldPopulationReview). With nearly 64.61% of the population residing in rural areas, access to quality education continues to be a challenge for millions of young learners. In low-income rural households, children—especially girls—are often diverted towards household responsibilities or family occupations at an early age, limiting their chances for formal education. Social norms, economic constraints, and preference for saving for marriage further restrict educational advancement for girls.
Educational infrastructure in rural regions is also significantly weaker compared to urban India, resulting in low enrolment and limited participation of girls in higher education. In Rajasthan, only 23% of girls enter higher education, underlining the need for targeted interventions that address both access and capability gaps.

To bridge this divide, Honda India Foundation (HIF) has established the Government Girls’ College and Women Polytechnic College in Tapukara, Rajasthan. The initiative aims to provide both higher education and skill-based diploma programs, enabling young women to pursue academic growth and secure employment-oriented training. The project focuses on empowering first-generation learners and addressing gender disparities in access to education.
The project commenced with land identification, which was generously offered by a local farmer who partnered in this community-development effort. Construction of the new integrated campus was completed in September 2025. The campus has been thoughtfully designed with a central administrative block and separate academic blocks for degree and diploma courses. It features 21 classrooms, 14 laboratories, 2 computer labs, 2 libraries, 6 staff rooms, a 25-seater video conference room, a 285-seater auditorium, a canteen, and modern sanitation facilities aligned to safety and hygiene standards.
To ensure long-term sustainability, the campus is equipped with an STP system, DG backup, a 100 kVA solar power plant, two rainwater harvesting units, a sports playground, and landscaped green areas with more than 300 planted saplings. These features reinforce HIF’s commitment to environmentally responsible infrastructure.
In FY 2025, the program supported around 650 girl students, significantly contributing to enhanced educational access, employability, and socio-economic upliftment for rural communities in Rajasthan. The project is poised to serve as a long-term catalyst for women’s empowerment and regional development.
